The Minister of Religion visa allows eligible applicants to take up sponsored roles within a UK faith community. Its full official name is the Minister of Religion visa (T2).
The route can cover ministers, qualifying missionaries and members of religious orders. Before applying, check the actual duties, sponsorship arrangements and English language requirements.
For applicants moving from the United States, nationality may simplify the English requirement, but the remaining application requirements still apply.
You may qualify if you are at least 18, have sponsorship for an eligible religious role, meet the English requirement or an exemption, and can meet the financial and other immigration requirements.
This route can offer a longer-term pathway, with settlement potentially available after five qualifying years under the current rules. Approval is not automatic simply because you hold a religious position.
A faith community may offer several roles involving very different responsibilities. Leading worship, supporting a religious order and helping with a charitable project can require different immigration routes.
Ask the organisation for a written description of your duties, working arrangements and proposed stay. This gives you a clearer basis for choosing the route and preparing consistent evidence.
It also helps you plan housing, family arrangements and the costs of moving.
The route principally covers key leading roles within faith-based organisations and qualifying work within religious orders.
The sponsor must assess the position and confirm that you are qualified to perform it.
Discuss questions such as:
A title such as “community leader” does not explain enough on its own. Use a detailed description of the work.
The Religious Worker visa (Temporary Work) supports different qualifying duties and has a shorter maximum stay.
If you are considering temporary religious work, compare the duties carefully. Where the core work involves leading a congregation through rites, rituals and preaching, the Immigration Rules direct applicants to the Minister of Religion route.
Some faith organisations also offer placements involving unpaid charity work.
The Charity Worker visa (Temporary Work) may be relevant where the placement meets its particular charitable-fieldwork requirements. The organisation’s charitable status alone does not determine the appropriate route.
Your organisation must hold a licence covering the Minister of Religion route. It must also assign a valid certificate of sponsorship for the position.
Review the sponsor requirements before proceeding.
The certificate is an electronic record containing your personal and job details. You use its reference in your application, normally within three months of assignment.
Check the recorded duties, dates and payment arrangements with the organisation. Resolve discrepancies before submitting rather than leaving UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to interpret conflicting information.
The English requirement is normally CEFR level B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Depending on your circumstances, you may meet it through an approved test, a qualifying degree or an exemption. An overseas degree used for this purpose may require an Ecctis assessment.
Our guide to English language evidence explains the wider evidence options.
US nationals are exempt from proving their knowledge of English under the nationality provisions.
Living in the United States does not create that exemption by itself. Check the rules applying to your nationality before booking a test or paying for a qualification assessment.
Applicants normally need £1,270 held for at least 28 consecutive days. The final day must fall within 31 days before applying.
An exemption may apply where the sponsor certifies maintenance or you have held valid UK permission for at least 12 months.
Confirm which approach you will use before selecting an application date.
Also prepare a wider living-cost budget. Ask whether the organisation provides accommodation, how payments work and which household expenses remain your responsibility.
The sponsor must offer appropriate pay and conditions, including compliance with minimum-wage and working-time rules where applicable. Any relevant minimum-wage exemption needs an explanation in the sponsorship record.
Request clear written terms. Identify salary, accommodation and other support separately so you understand the arrangement.
The current application charges are:
| Application | Fee per person |
|---|---|
| Applying from outside the UK | £819 |
| Extending or switching inside the UK | £943 |
Dependants pay the applicable fee individually.
Review visa application costs when preparing the overall budget.
The immigration health surcharge is additional. Its usual adult rate is £1,035 per year, with the total depending on the permission requested.
For overseas applications, the usual decision timeframe is three weeks. You can normally apply up to three months before the sponsored start date.
Check the latest official Minister of Religion guidance before applying, as fees and requirements can change.
Your evidence normally includes:
Follow the checklist for your individual application. Prepare complete, readable copies and check that names and dates agree across the documents.
A practical sequence is to confirm the role, review sponsorship details, organise evidence and then complete the online application. Follow the instructions supplied for identity checks and document submission.
Keep the submitted form and correspondence together for future reference.
Initial overseas permission can last up to three years and one month, or the sponsorship period plus 14 days, whichever is shorter.
An extension can cover up to three further years, subject to the sponsorship period and a maximum total stay of six years. You need to remain eligible and obtain a new certificate of sponsorship.
Review the next steps well before your permission ends. A longer appointment within the organisation does not automatically extend your immigration permission.
Some applicants can switch from another route while inside the UK. Restrictions apply, including for visitors, Seasonal Workers and certain other categories.
Students must also meet additional conditions relating to their course or proposed start date.
Check eligibility before relying on an in-country application.
Eligible partners and children can apply as dependants. Their applications and permission require separate attention.
If your plans are long term, begin settlement planning early.
Under the current rules, settlement generally requires five qualifying years, continued need for your role, the applicable pay requirements and compliance with residence rules. Applicants aged 18 to 64 normally need to pass the Life in the UK Test. Keep travel records, sponsorship documents and employment correspondence organised. Recheck the rules when preparing a settlement application.
Explain the actual duties and their place within the faith community.
Confirm that the organisation has authorisation for this particular category.
Check nationality exemptions and other acceptable evidence first.
Review maintenance certification, salary and accommodation separately.
Keep track of residence and other requirements throughout your stay.
These guides explain related routes, evidence requirements and longer-term planning:

The Minister of Religion visa (T2) provides a sponsored pathway for eligible roles within UK faith communities. The proposed duties, sponsorship and English requirements are central to assessing whether it suits your circumstances.
Before applying, confirm the role qualifies, review the financial arrangements and prepare the required evidence. Understand the permission period and check the latest official guidance when planning extensions or settlement.
